Part of my role as the SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) governor, for Whitchurch C of E Primary School, is to ensure that children with special educational needs are fully catered for. I recently had a meeting with Miss Gosling, our school’s SENCO lead. It was most worthwhile and I felt that she is very aware and working hard for all children. Inevitably this involves leading teachers and Learning Support Assistants towards new ideas and ways of helping those individual struggling children.
Something that intrigued me is the way LSA’s are now helping in class. Gone are the days of continually sitting next to a struggling child and doing the work for/with them. Research has shown that this is counterproductive as it can rob the child of resilience and self confidence because they become dependent on the adult for help. Instead individual intensive programmes are now being developed. These target the particular problem and are specific to the child. Each programme lasts from 12 to 20 weeks, when the child is expected to have ‘caught up’ with the class. After this the child is encouraged to work with the class. The child will continue to be tracked to make sure they are managing.
I have witnessed the wonderful way our LSA’s work with individual children, moving them forward so that they can be an integrated part of their particular class.

A very warm welcome back to school and hello to the new children and teachers. We hope you are all enjoying Whitchurch Primary. The new school year has got off to a flying start for all the school. It is lovely to see so many new opportunities for the children including a number of clubs – cycling club, sewing club as well as encouraging the children to participate in wonderful traditional celebrations such as Harvest Festival – what an amazing photograph on school matters of the fabulous collection of food!
The governing body have met 3 times already – twice for the regular committee meetings where we focus on Curriculum & Monitoring, the Resources committee and also a Whole Governing body meeting. We have reviewed the skills of the team and have two parent governor vacancies which we hope to fill this month. Minutes of the whole Governing body meetings are posted on the school website once the minutes are ratified. The Governor newsletter is nearing completion and will be sent before the end of this term.
Good luck to year 6
The year 6 residential trip to Calshot is rapidly approaching – we look forward to hearing all about it and seeing the photo’s. We are sure you will all have a fabulous time! Thank you also to the teachers that are accompanying the children and making this trip possible.

It has been a very busy time for the Governing Body. Recruiting a new Headteacher has been our priority in the last few weeks. As you will now know we have appointed Mrs Kate Steven as our new Headteacher. She joins us from a very successful time at Park Primary School in Aldershot, Hampshire. We had a wonderful short list of candidates and felt very humbled by the passion all the candidates showed in their endeavour to become our new Headteacher.
Since our reconstitution in the Spring we have now been reforming our two sub-committees. Our new committees now comprise of a Resources Committee and a Communication/Monitoring Committee. Both committees are working hard to establish their full remit and have put together work plans to ensure that we do the most effective job that we can. One of the agenda items that we are focusing on this year is how we communicate more with staff and parents and this blog will be a part of that plan. We would always be interested to know what information you would like to know about the Governing Body and the work that we do.
Due to Governor terms expiring and the retirement of a Governor we have the following vacancies at the present time:-
- Parent Governor
- Staff Governor
- Local Authority Governor
- Co-opted Governor
If you have an interest in any of these positions please contact Clare Datta, Chair of Governors via School Reception.

The Governing Body is presently under taking its reconstitution as per Government guidelines for all schools.
Once this has happened a list of the newly appointed and co-opted governors will be published.
We are working hard as a Governing Body to recruit a new Headteacher for our school. Once this has happened we want to focus on our communication with parents and the community which will mean more blog updates and readily available information.
If you have any queries or questions in the meantime then do not hesitate to contact the Chair of Governors – Clare Datta – via School Reception.
